Prof Ian Cumming OBE, National NHS Managing Director for Quality speaks on Managing Quality through the transition

Prof Ian Cumming OBE, National NHS Managing Director for Quality speaks on Quality During Transition

“Cutting training budgets has a negative impact on health… it is fundamentally the wrong thing to do.. when money is tight we need to invest in staff training and development to ensure quality”

On Commissioning
“Commissioners are responsible for the quality of care they commission”

On Dashboards
“the aim is for a single quality dashboard for use across the whole NHS – we have a template”

On Never events
“my hobby horse at the moment is never events – the clue is in the  name – the number of never events is going up in this country. The top three are wrong site/wrong patient surgery, retained swabs and instruments and misplaced nasogastric tubes – it is absolutely inexcusable to operate on the wrong patient but it is still happening every day”

On Pressure Ulcers
“pressure ulcers are not currently never events but my opinion is that they should be especially grade 3 and 4. We’ve seen an increase recently in pressure ulcers caused by lack of basic nursing care particularly in intensive care caused by nasogastric tubes and oxygen masks”

On Mid Staffs
“at mid staffs the culture of poor care became the norm”

On Mortality
“HSMR/SHMI is a smoke alarm – you cant just ignore it, you need to investigate why”
