“Non-medical prescribers are saving the NHS in England an estimated annual £777m, which could be increased further by at least £270m a year if more practices were to employ them, according to a new report.” Nursing Times

Through national updates and practical case studies delegates will hear how to develop and maintain prescribing competence, and how to develop effectiveness in post qualification practice. The conference will look at why non-medical prescribers are not always prescribing post qualification and to support non-medical prescribers to restart their prescribing practice.  There will be a focus on the New National competency framework for all prescribers and how the framework can be implemented in non medical prescribing practice.

“It is essential that medicines are prescribed in a way that is safe, efficient and appropriate to the person taking them. Involving the person or carer in that decision is becoming increasingly important and this framework emphasises that. Ultimately, this framework will help support prescribers to achieve the competence required to prescribe medicines in the most optimal way.” Jonathan Underhill, Medicines Clinical Adviser at NICE’s Medicines and Prescribing Programme, July 2016

“Properly trained non-medical staff should absolutely take on prescribing roles where it’s appropriate.” Professor Neal Maskrey Consultant Clinical Adviser Medicines and Prescribing Centre NICE

This timely conference will update delegates on their responsibilities with regard to maintaining non-medical prescribing competence for revalidation and the the NMC Code which has included specific requirements for prescribing and medicines management as well as leadership. The conference will include case studies demonstrating prescribing competence and will also focus on difficult issue such as prescribing for comorbidities.

“Independent prescribing is defined as: ‘Prescribing by an appropriate practitioner (which currently includes doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, optometrists, podiatrists and physiotherapists), responsible and accountable for the assessment of patients with undiagnosed or diagnosed conditions and for decisions about the clinical management required, including prescribing medicines’…There are many potential benefits for patients, commissioners and providers…Independent prescribing can also enable new ways of working to improve quality towards delivering safe, effective services focussed on the patient experience. It facilitates partnership working across professional and organizational boundaries within commissioning/provider landscapes and with patients to redesign care pathways that are cost-effective and sustainable” NHS England
