This conference focuses on improving the emergency response to people experiencing mental health crisis who arrive in A&E services. Ideally people experiencing mental health crisis will be supported by mental health crisis service and therefore not have to attend A&E. However many people experiencing mental health crisis are not aware of, or do not have easily accessible alternative options therefore the only option is to either not access help, to dial 999 or go to A&E.

“Long waits for mental health services are not only a poor experience for patients but also are associated with higher rates of presentation in an emergency, and poor outcomes; waiting time standards across urgent and community pathways will help to address this… Ensuring access to timely referral, assessment and care is especially important for people in need of urgent and emergency health services. The proposed standard for urgent and emergency care will ensure that people can rightly have the same expectations of our urgent mental health services as they do for physical health services”

Clinically-led Review of NHS Access Standards, NHS England 2021

“Improving access to mental health services is a top priority. These new standards would help patients get support faster – including having a face-to-face assessment within one hour of being referred from A&E”

Gillian Keegan Minister for Mental Health February 2022

“The NHS will continue to treat mental health with the same urgency as physical health”

The Government's revised 2021-22 mandate to NHS England and NHS Improvement, 31 March 2022

The conference will also discuss meeting the NHS mental health access standards, the proposals of which would see those who present to A&E with mental health needs having a face-to-face assessment by specialist mental health liaison teams within one hour of being referred by an emergency department.
