This on-demand conference aims to bring together leaders of outpatient services to focus on leading and improving outpatient services through the Covid-19 pandemic. The conference opens with national updates and good practice case studies of how we can transform outpatients for patients during Covid-19, meeting the demand following the lockdown period, and ensuring outpatients are covid safe for those who are attending both in person and virtually . The conference continues with an extended in depth masterclass which will contact interactive group work focusing on Improving capacity, access, patient flow and waiting times in outpatient services. The conference will also assess the impact of the pandemic on the future of outpatients and moving towards a ‘New Normal’.

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant rapid and significant change. We have had to change how we treat patients, and patients have changed how they seek healthcare. Although the full picture is far from clear, the pandemic has demonstrated that the NHS can adapt quickly. It presents us with the opportunity to reset outpatient services. In doing so, we must not be constrained by our current concept of ‘outpatients’. Instead we need to think simply, in terms of how patients can be best supported by primary and secondary care working collaboratively

Resetting outpatient services for the 21st century in the context of COVID-19 Royal College of Physicians July

Having pulled out all the stops to treat Covid patients over the last few months, our health services now need to redouble their focus on the needs of all other patients too, while recognising the new challenges of overcoming our current Covid-related capacity constraints… To reduce infection risk and support social distancing across the hospital estate, clinicians should consider avoiding asking patients to attend physical outpatient appointments where a clinically-appropriate and accessible alternative exists…This means collaboration between primary and secondary care to use advice and guidance where possible and treat patients without an onward referral, as well as giving patients more control over their outpatient follow-up care by adopting a patient-initiated follow-up approach across major outpatient specialties. Where an outpatient 5 appointment is clinically necessary, the national benchmark is that at least 25% could be conducted by telephone or video including 60% of all follow-up appointments
