In February 2022, 12,423 beds were occupied by Covid-19 patients, with 997 inpatients in NHS hospitals in England being newly diagnosed with Covid-19 in a 24 hour period. The government have released a plan for living with Covid-19 but how do we live with Covid in a hospital setting with vulnerable and high risk patients? Every death is a tragedy, but this is impacted further when a patient who has come to hospital to be treated for another condition dies as a result of an infection they acquired in the hospital environment.

This conference focuses on Hospital Onset Covid-19: outbreak and investigation to learn from cases and reduce hospital transmission.  The conference will focus on moving forward in 2022, identifying hospital outbreaks through effective surveillance, effective control measures and outbreak management and investigation.

“Hospital acquired infections (nosocomial infections) are significant because of the effect on the health of patients and staff, and the risk of transmission between patients and staff.Fear of contracting COVID-19 can deter people with healthcare needs from attending hospital. Healthcare staff who contract COVID-19 or are required to isolate can be absent from work for prolonged periods, often at a time of maximum strain on the workforce.”

Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch

“In addition to the crucial roll out of the vaccine booster programme and systematic patient and staff testing, the consistent application of IPC measures remains the most effective defence against the entry and spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings”

NHS England and NHS Improvement January 2022

“A rapid and continued response through ongoing surveillance of rates of infection within the local population and for hospital/organisation onset cases (staff and patients/individuals) must continue.”
