This conference focuses on the important issue of improving radiology reporting turnaround times and the development of Radiology Information Systems and PACS to ensure optimisation, support the move towards imaging networks and ensure integration of Artificial Intelligence into workflow. The national review of radiology reporting within the NHS in England by the Care Quality Commission found huge variation in radiology reporting highlighting trusts that had backlogs of 33,400 unreported images (the oldest images had been waiting to be reported for eight months). The conference will also include an update on the role of Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Reporting following the RCR statement that “In the future, New technologies, machines learning and AI will play a significant role in radiology reporting”, and the development of diagnostic imaging networks as outlined in the NHS England Long Term Plan, which states that “By 2023, diagnostic imaging networks will enable the rapid transfer of clinical images from care settings close to the patient to the relevant specialist clinician to interpret.” The afternoon will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Radiology and Medical Imaging and the integration of AI into digital systems at an NHS Trust and Network level.

“Imaging services have evolved and transformed over the last 30 years, both to keep pace with new technology and to support the evolution of new diagnoses and treatments. With ever increasing demands, an ageing population and an increase in the complexity of imaging examinations radiology services have already started to develop innovative approaches to meeting some of those challenges.”

NHS Improvement November 2019

“The lack of image-sharing across hospitals is leading to reporting backlogs and delays and harm to patients… IT specifications and procurement will be absolutely key.”

Dr Caroline Rubin RCR Vice President for Clinical Radiology Nov 2019
