This Virtual Safe Staffing Summit focuses on delivering safe and effective nurse staffing levels and skill mix in practice. This conference will support you to adhere to the 2021 RCN Nursing Workforce Standards and ensure evidence-based approaches to effective staffing decisions, taking into account all elements that contribute to safe, effective care and patient experience.

This evidence is clear that safe and effective nurse staffing levels improves the quality of care and patient safety. The important issues of skill mix, acuity monitoring, recognizing red flag events and escalation will be discussed. There will be an extended session focusing on evidence informed decision support tools for safe staffing, on delivering safe staffing 24/7, and an update on how to combine national tools with professional judgement. Through expert extended sessions and practical NHS Trust case studies delivered by experienced nurse directors, the conference will take a practical approach to supporting you implement the new standards and to review and improve nursing staffing and skill mix in your service.

“The nursing workforce is the most important factor in the provision of safe, effective, high quality compassionate care in a timely, cost-effective and sustainable manner. …Evidence and experience show that having the right numbers of nursing staff, with the right skills, in the right place, at the right time improves health outcomes, the quality of care delivered, and patient safety.”

Nursing Workforce Standards, Royal College of Nursing June 2021

“It is nurses who understand the complexity of nursing care provision and the nursing workload. It is registered nurses and nursing support workers who provide nursing care. Therefore, it must be registered nurses who set the standard for nurse staffing and be assured that the nursing workforce is safe for the acuity and dependency of those they care for…The setting of collective standards across the UK has never been achieved before; however there is now a unique opportunity to build on the collective leadership demonstrated during the pandemic.”
