“We propose to adopt the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Single competency framework for all prescribers as our new standards of proficiency for nurse and midwife prescribing practice….we anticipate formally adopting the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Single competency framework for all prescribers as our practice standards from spring 2018. Education providers may adopt these standards of proficiency as ‘early adopters’ from September 2018, and all programmes would be expected to adopt these standards of proficiency by September 2019.” NMC June 2017

Last year a new and updated Competency Framework to support healthcare professionals to prescribe effectively was published by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. Through national updates, practical case studies and extended expert sessions, this conference focuses on demonstrating and improving prescribing competence and practice – embedding the competency framework, and ten competency dimensions for all prescribers.

“The competency frame work is there to guide you To acquire and maintain competence to be safe, effective prescribers who are able to support patients to get the best outcomes from their medicines. It is there to underpin your professional responsibility for prescribing. It should be used to inform standards, the development of education, and the guidance and advice from regulators, education providers, professional organisations and specialist groups. Also the framework brings professions together and harmonise education for prescribers by offering a competency framework for all prescribers; with this comes shared understanding.” Angela Alexander, Professor of Pharmacy Education, University of Reading, May 2017

“Both the number of medicines prescribed and the complexity of medicine regimens are increasing. The challenges associated with prescribing the right medicines and supporting patients to use them effectively should not be underestimated. There’s lots of evidence to show that much needs to be done to improve the way we prescribe and support patients in effective medicines use.” Ash Soni, President The Royal Pharmaceutical Society
