“Safeguarding means protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. It's fundamental to high-quality health and social care.”
Care Quality Commission 2016

The aims of personalised safeguarding as outlined by NHS England are:

  • A personalised approach that enables safeguarding to be done with, “not to”, people
  • Practice that focuses on achieving meaningful improvement to people’s circumstances rather than just on ‘investigation’ and ‘conclusion’
  • To prevent harm and reduce the risk of abuse or neglect to adults with care and support needs.
  • To safeguard individuals in a way that support them in making choices and having control in how they choose to live their lives.
  • To promote an outcomes approach in safeguarding that works for people resulting in the best experience possible.
  • To raise public awareness so that professionals, other staff and communicates as a whole play their part in preventing, identifying and responding to abuse and neglect.

This conference focuses on safeguarding vulnerable adults in mental health services. Through national updates and practical case studies the conference will update delegates on making safeguarding personal in mental health services, ensuring compliance with the Care Act, acting and escalating safeguarding concerns, training and educating frontline staff and ensuring effective partnership working. The conference will also include an extended legal update session, a focus on Mental Capacity, Choice and Autonomy in safeguarding, complex safeguarding around self neglect cases and the importance of learning from safeguarding investigations to ensure improvement.

“Overall our ratings suggest that care for people with mental health problems is not good enough and needs to be improved…In particular, the safety of patients in NHS trusts remains an area of concern” Care Quality Commission 2016
