Safe Staffing: Nursing Staffing Levels and Skillmix

This event has now past, but there may well be news on the event including presentations and quotes from the day at our News pages here, a full list of our forthcoming events is available here.

On 15th July 2014 NICE published national advice and guidance on safe staffing. The guidance aims to “ensure safe and efficient nurse staffing levels on hospital wards that provide overnight care for adult patients in England and is in response to concerns about standards of patient care in the aftermath of the Mid Staffs scandal. The guideline states that as patients’ needs differ from day to day, there is no single staff number that can be safely and adequately applied across the wide range of wards in the NHS. The guidance committee concluded that when each registered nurse is caring for more than 8 patients this is a signal to check that patients are not at risk of harm.” This guidance also sets out “ ‘red flag events’ which warn when nurses in charge of shifts must act immediately to ensure they have enough staff to meet the needs of patients on that ward.‘Red flag events’ include patients not being provided with basic care such as pain relief or help to visit the bathroom.” National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, July 2014

This conference will focus on delivering safer staffing and implementing the New NICE Guidance on safer staffing in your service, and reviewing staffing using NICE accredited tools. The important issues of skill mix, acuity monitoring, recognising red flag events and escalation will also be discussed through expert sessions and practical NHS Trust case studies delivered by experienced nurse directors.
