A national update on nurse staffing and skill mix Susan Osborne CBE Chair Safe Staffing Alliance (SSA) Independent Nursing & Management Consultant presenting today at the out of hours conference.

Susan OsborneSusan Osborne

Susans presentation illustrated the outcome of poor staffing from the MId Staffordshire Enquiry and Keogh Reviews.  It described the history of the NHS and the effect on the nurse leadership and the workforce.  It highlighted  the elements required to  create a nurse workforce that is fit for practice and the need to work together to achieve safe nurse staffing levels across all health sectors.

  • Nurse staffing and skill mix: National update
  • Ensuring safe staffing 24/7
  • Nurse staffing and skill mix out of hours
  • NICE Recommendations on staffing

In her presentation Susan states:

"Being a non-executive I need to know what questions to ask executives to achieve quality"

"No distinction now between junior nurses and senior nurses, this can be when standards fall down"

"Seemed to be a knee jerk reaction to the Francis, too much data not being translated sensibly"

"Band 7 and 8 nurses reduced significantly, therefore nurse staffing levels dumbed down as more junior nurses"

"8 patients per nurse is an unsafe level of care, what care can you offer in 7 12 minutes per patient per hour"

"Invest in nursing to get the right skilmix and the best clinical outcomes"

As Chair of the Safe Staffing Alliance, a key message is that Numbers do Matter and that any level below 1 RN to 8 Patients is an unsafe staffing level and not a minimum level.

Skill/ Grade MIx must also be taken into consideration along with the environment in which care is delivered.
