News and updates from today's Mental Health Crisis Conference

Conference chair Jim Symington National Advisor, NCCMH (R.C.Psych) and Consultant to The ‘Mental Health Crisis Concordat’ opens today's conference with an update on progress with mental health crisis care.

Jim's Biography:

Jim Symington worked on behalf of HMG with 22 national organisations to develop the 2014 national Concordat ‘Improving outcomes for people experiencing mental health crisis’.

Working with Mind, he supported the (now 28) national signatories to the Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat and 92 localities across England to embed local Declaration commitments and to update their action plans for continuous and sustainable improvements.

Jim works with the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health developing commissioning guidance and access and waiting time standards for urgent and acute mental health care, on behalf of NHS England.

Following the morning presentation's, Joy Hibbins Founder and CEO Suicide Crisis discusses 'How A UK Suicide Crisis Centre Has Achieved Zero Suicide', covering:

• The value of lived experience of mental health crisis in creating an effective service
• How the Suicide Crisis Centre operates and why clients survive
• The reasons why so many men feel able to access the service
• Reasons why a high percentage of clients are also under psychiatric services 

Mark Smith MBE British Transport Police Suicide Prevention, opens the afternoon session by looking at 'Working in partnership to deliver effective Crisis Care' and will focus on:

• How British Transport Police and NHS professionals are working together in a joint team to provide more effective transition from crisis to car
• The benefits of a joint Police/NHS risk based approach to mental healthy and suicide prevention
• The power of data and intelligence sharing
