Chris Fokke Chief Clinical Information Officer Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Delivers an extended session on Electronic Prescribing: Learning from a rapid rollout:

- what does an eprescribing system cost in terms of money and time?
In his presentation Chris states:
"Based at Basingstoke hospital and carried this out in 2010- emphasised on - how they did it however, may not work for everyone else"
“Accurate and immediate recording needs to include reasons for withholding or not administering medicines”
“Hardware was clinician-centred; probably would have been better to have hardware patient-centred”
“Once the roll-out momentum is lost, it is extremely difficult to roll out new areas”
“Rapid roll out doesn’t work for all Clinical system projects”
"Integrated epr system- buy it off the shelf system and its all together and configure for your trust"
"If you don’t have a manager with clinical background it can cause problems and provides help and support for others"
"Training and support structure is key along with preparation and planning"
"Looked at all process and 4 years on this is still be continued- this is about clinical change not about IT"
"All training must be covered- including night staff and weekend staff to provide a 24/7 base"
"e- learning assessments didn’t work in the trust- doctors like one to one and nurses preferred group sessions- this results in costly training"
"no safety issues have occurred from paper base to electronic!!"
"Using protocols is faster and more individualised prescribing therefore reducing time"
"6 hours down to 45 minutes in reduction for pharmacy prescribing on wards"
