Deborah Robertson, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader, Non Medical Prescribing, University of Chester speaking at Nurse Prescribing in Birmingham today looked at the important concept of competence in Non Medical Prescribing and will focus discussion around the National Prescribing Centre Single Competency Framework for Prescribers.

Deborah discussed how to ensure you have the history-taking, clinical assessment and diagnosis skills to prescribe appropriately and effectively

The importance of keeping prescribing knowledge up-to-date: accessing education, training and resources

How and why you should demonstrate your competence to prescribe

The subject of coaching and mentoring for current and aspiring non-medical prescribers

Deborah explored the key areas of prescribing competence that lead to the qualification of safe and appropriate prescribing practitioners. And looked at developing competence and discuss the importance of knowledge and the theoretical standpoint as well as demonstrating skills in the clinical arena.

Deborahs presentation covered how, once developed, competence can be assessed and maintain in clinical practice including the issues around ongoing CPD and the relevance to prescribers in practice and training. Competency was defined in its broadest sense Deborah outlined the benefits and uses of a competency framework in the development, assessment and maintenance of prescribing safe practice.
