Developing and fine tuning your clinical leadership skills

Dr Umesh PrabhuDr Umesh Prabhu

Dr Umesh Prabhu Medical Director Wrightinton, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust shares his experience as a clinical leader at today’s Effective Clinical Director conference.  In his presentation Dr Prabhu spoke on:

• self assessment of your leadership skills
• leading culture change and empowering others
• leading the directorate: tips for success
• developing the leadership skills to move to a board level Medical Director position

Dr Prabhu’s top tips for successful leadership based on his own varied leadership experience at two different Trusts included:

•    Do Not Blame Staff: Ineffective strategies, systems and culture are bigger barriers to achievements than the talent of people
•    Be Firm But Always Be Polite
•    Accept that there will be some people in the organisation who will never make it on the journey
•    You have to want to be a leader and to make a difference, not just get the money or job title…leadership is a choice, not a position.
•    Be calmly confident, but never arrogant.
•    Be humble and have others take the credit.
•    Be values led and ‘live’ those values openly.
•    Walk the walk – Don’t just talk
•    It’s not personal (but it’s all about relationships, so sometimes it is!)
•    Listen more and speak less.
•    Lots of things matter less than you think…but some matter more. Learn to distinguish between them and act and feel accordingly.
•    Be positive and enthusiastic virtually all of the time and model how you want others to be.
•    Believe in yourself …and realise that some people don’t believe in you, or themselves.
•    Start tough and soften up, (can’t be done easily the other way round).

Dr Prabhu said; "What damages a trust is not listening to staff...Success is never due to 1 or 2 individuals it is to everyone."
