Elaine Hanzak Speaks on Improving Maternal Mental Health

Elaine HanzakElaine Hanzak

Elaine began her presentation by sharing her own and other stories of postnatal illness along with some of the latest figures and current situation for relevant help and support in the UK. Elaine also provide some of her thoughts on how individuals can improve their knowledge and practice against a wealth of additional resources. In true ‘teacher’ style Elaine gave homework on reflections and actions.

Elaine stressed the following points:

- We're talking about real people and real families that we can all make a difference to

- My perception was that others were doing fine with their perfect babies - and i was a failure

- PND - I felt ashamed and embarrassed

- There are more mother and baby specialist units in UK prisons than in the nhs

- I was on bbc breakfast this week and I've woken up the bbc to the meaning of PERINATAL

- Discuss a mothers expectation vs reality - this will help nip anxiety in the bud

- Maternal MH Alliance this week have launched a map showing where there is provision of perinatal MH services.  It shows there are huge gaps in the UK
