Karen Dawber, Director of Nursing speaks on Improving the quality of nursing appraisal to demonstrate competence, conduct

Karen Dawber, Director of Nursing and Organisational Development, Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said she liked to think of the appraisal process for nurses as 'The Conversation'.

"Nursing is getting back to the grass roots I feel, what the basics of to be a nurse really is. Someone that cares, is compassionate and can have a conversation, and appraisal is no different. It's about getting to understand what they want to do and what you want them to do.

"The most important skill we have all got as nurses is to be able to listen and actually hear what people are saying," she said.

"There shouldn't be a surprise at an appraisal, it's not about looking back and giving people marks out of ten.

"At Warrington, we have something called QPS," said Karen. "It's not rocket science, it's about making sure that quality, people and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do.
