Liz Lees speaks on preparing for revalidation

Liz LeesLiz Lees

Liz's presentation was inspired through her experience as a Consultant Nurse at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.  A core part of Liz's role has been to lead the education development of registered and non-registered practitioners (predominantly nurses and healthcare assistants) within a large acute medicine unit and an enormous plethora of topics span clinical and non-clinical aspects comprise the education framework. To this end, Liz established a master class which is focussed upon enabling & empowering registered staff to select, appraise and critically reflect upon the skills they have to offer and how they evidence this, in order re-register.

Over the last ten years Liz has discovered newly registered nurses often start their careers motivated with genuine intentions to evidence their continuous professional developmental (CPD) outputs. Notwithstanding, this energy tends to dwindle when they realise the CPD “Portfolio’ does not remain static. Liz endeavours to promote diverse thinking about what constitutes evidence and how to integrate this as part of their daily practice rather than it being considered a ‘bolt on’ activity. Liz advised- If its not do-able, it won’t be done!

Liz believes we have been catapulted into a new stratosphere where the Re-validation process is the new vehicle. The deconstruction of a dusty old file, which stores certificates proving attendance on study days, has to undergo metamorphosis to a dynamic evolving Portfolio contributing to the stages of the process in Re-validation. Furthermore traditional Portfolios will still have a role to play on an individual level but must also be linked to a much broader understanding of how training, skills, competencies, supervision and appraisal contribute both to safe practice in the NHS and proven personal integrity towards delivering the 6 C’s of Nursing.

Liz concluded by saying: On your journey ‘who were you’, ‘who have you become’ and ‘what wisdom do you have to offer’…. (Merriam et al, 1997).
