Managing poor performance and supporting doctors in difficulty

Dr Steve Evans Adviser National Clinical Assessment Service & Former Medical Director spoke at today’s Effective Clinical Director conference on:

• identifying poor or declining clinical performance
• managing poor performance and supporting doctors in difficulty: what to do when a concern arises
• interaction between NCAS and Employment Liaison Advisers (ELA’s) and the medical royal colleges
• the role of Human Resources in supporting the Clinical Director
• ensuring you have early warning systems to alert when things are going wrong in the directorate

In his presentation Dr Evan’s explained the role of the National Clinical Assessment Service and the support available for managing poor performance and supporting doctors in difficulty.  He said the early warning signs to look out for include: 
•    Change in normal behaviour
•    Fall off in clinical performance
•    Clinical Adverse events, SUIs
•    Poor timekeeping
•    Escalation of ‘background irritations’ 
•    ‘Corridor comments’ from colleagues
•    Complaints, whistleblowing

Dr Evan’s went on to discuss how to deal  with concerns and gave practical tips for the Clinical Director:
•    Don’t ignore concerns
•    Follow due process
•    Record everything
•    Don’t let it get personal
•    Ask for help
•    Remain cheerful!

Steve Evans graduated from Guy's Hospital Medical School, and after training in London and Melbourne, was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist and Director of Critical Care in Coventry in 1987.  He first became a clinical director in 1994 and subsequently took on a number of senior management roles before moving to Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital in 2006 as full time Executive Medical Director. Steve was awarded the degree of MPA with distinction by Warwick University in 2009.  In 2011 he moved to NCAS as a full-time adviser.  Steve is a past chairman of the BMA Medical Managers’ Subcommittee. He served three terms on the Board of the British Association of Medical Managers and was a member of the Medical Leaders’ Professional Council.  He has also been a member of the Professional Standards Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and has acted as external adviser on appointments committees for LHB Medical Director posts for NHS Wales.
