Meeting the new national guidance on seclusion

Guy Cross Mental Health Act Approvals Manager, Policy Lead Positive and Safe at the Department of Health spoke at today’s Reducing Seclusion conference on:
 

● ensuring only people detained under the MHA should be considered for seclusion
● ensuring seclusion is seen as a last resort
● ensuring any occasion of seclusion is a trigger for an assessment for detention under the MHA undertaken immediately

In his presentation Guy commented; "the use of different restraints across organisations can vary along with levels of restraints."
"Staff levels impact and do not provide enough time service users"
"In November this data will be published to show across services"
"Definition of seclusion is 2015 code of practice has changed from the 2008 definition"

In his presentation Guy looked at why there is a need to focus on reducing restrictive interventions, and the aims of taking a positive and proactive care approach. He discussed what constitutes seclusion and finished by providing details of the Positive and Safe Care Network of Champions which aims to reduce the need for restrictive interventions by sharing good practice, details are available at http://www.england.nhs.uk/6cs/groups/positive-safe-champions/.

Guy Cross initially trained as a solicitor before working for the Department of Health as a civil servant for the last 19 years. In that time he has worked in a number of roles including workforce development, organisational development and most recently mental health. His current portfolio includes responsibility for Mental health Act approvals and implementation of the Positive and Safe programme.
