Anne McDermottAnne McDermott

“It is important that staff and nurses have the right training to work in advanced roles”

Anne went on to discuss why competency is important and this included:
Maintains standards
Facilitates good practice
Patient safety
Organisational accountability/liability
Professional accountability

“You may think someone is competent but are they? We can develop our competence but we must maintain it. The definition of competence in the dictionary is the condition of being capable and have the ability. Polices and protocols enables practices to be measured, provides clarity and enables standards of care.”

Anne concluded her presentation by saying that eexperienced nurses are in a good position to assess services offered to patients and to consider alternative ways of working.  And that nurse led clinics can improve the provision of quality care and increase productivity.

She also said that nurse led initiatives offer opportunities for professional role development and increased job satisfaction.

“You need to make sure you have the right people with the right skills, in the right place at the right time.”
