Demonstrating compliance with the revised NMC code in practice
Julie Hamilton Head of Nursing Revalidation and Regulation at Guys and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust spoke at today’s Nursing Appraisal and Revalidation conference on:
- demonstrating compliance with the code of conduct
- how can we check nurses and midwives continue to meet the NMC standards and the revised code in terms of conduct and competence?
- developing an appraisal system trust objectives, divisional objectives, ward objectives and linking the individual objectives and roles back into the overall aims
- our experience and developments as a revalidation pilot site
Julie talked about how taking part in the revalidation pilot was a genuinely positive and worthwhile experience at her Trust, she said nurses and midwives found evidencing their practice made them proud of their professional development, they were keen to have their confirmation to show what they had achieved and demonstrate their professionalism. Julie said they found reflection exteremly powerful that you begin to think about who you are as a nurse or midwife, how you fit into the organisation, and once you start thinking about it feelings and emotions come out.

- Don’t over complicate it, keep it simple, but above all nurse leaders at whatever level need to really own this, believe in it and maintain a positive approach
Julie gave examples of what can be used as evidence and discussed how with feedback you need to be prepared to receive, acknowledge and learn from it. She also discussed reflection and the appraisal process:
Writing your reflective accounts
- If you are in a leadership role you need to reflect at two levels your own individual practice and what you have done or could have done as a leader
- You can write five accounts that cover aspects of all four domains or do as the registrant did and write a couple of accounts relevant to each domain
- The best way to write these is to make them personal, it’s not an academic piece of writing, it’s about you and your practice
- Linking back to the NMC Code ensures that the Code is fully embedded in your professional and clinical practice and in your learning
- Time to reflect on past year
- What went well?
- What could have gone better?
- Identification of further development needs and support required
- Split appraisal into two parts
- Review of portfolio and reflective discussion
- Then focus on performance
- Yearly review of portfolio and discussion re revalidation
Julie finished by saying; "as senior nurses and leaders it's [revalidation] really important that we embrace it, and make sure everyone else finds it a positive experience, if we get it right it can be a powerful tool for the profession."

Julie graduated as a Bachelor of Nursing from Glasgow University in 1997 and has since worked in a variety of roles in London Trusts. Julie initially specialised in Intensive Care Nursing at Guys and St. Thomas' hospital and within this area undertook roles in clinical practice, research and in practice and staff development. She completed her MSc in Physiology at Kings College London and taught at the university on both the transition to critical care nursing and Intensive Care course. In 2010, Julie decided to broaden her experience and took up a Matron position within the Imaging Directorate. She worked as both a Matron and a Head of Nursing within Imaging before moving into the Chief Nurses Office to lead on the pilot of Revalidation. Julie continues to work at Guys and St. Thomas' and is now the Head of Nursing for Education, Revalidation and Regulation.
