Neil Churchill & Paul Jebb NHS England discuss the elements of care that should happen every time to every patient

Neil Churchill Director of Patient Experience and Paul Jebb Patient Experience Professional Lead at NHS England spoke at today’s Always Events® conference on:

  • Developing NHS England Always Events programme

  • Work done within Trusts pioneering the Always event programme

  • Lessons learnt from developing the programme

  • Update on toolkit development

Neil opened the presentation by looking at the need for Always Events methodology, he said; "most patient experiences are good but not consistently so...the minority say overall care is poor but 49% say something was poor." Alwyays Events will help ensure good care consistently.  Neil explained that Always Events are not set objectives for improvement, the decision was taken to move away from a national set of Always Events as the approach is very much from the ground up, a co-produced agreement between patient groups and staff.  Neil said Always Events are; "an effective quality improvement methodology based on what people area actually doing in services and what is actually happening".

Paul continued the presentation with a look at the work being done nationally to implement Always Events and take forward action area 2 of Compassion in Practice the CNOs strategy which focuses on promoting experiences of care. The initiative is now being extended to a further 8 pilot sites, using methodology from IHI and Picker Europe and with an aim to develop a toolkit to rollout across England.

The full presentation is available for downloas at the end of this page.

In the audience discussion the need to embed Always Events early on at student level was raised along with the need to engage AHPs and others not just the nursing group.
There was also discussion around supporting healthcare professionals and what matters to them too so the focus is not just on the patient but the professional as a person as well. Tommy said; "we have to ask the people we work aside what matters not just the patient."
