Caldicott Principles and Information Sharing: National Developments
Martin Staples, Data Sharing and Privacy Specialist, NHS England
Martin joined the civil service in 1999 working for DWP operations.
Moved to his local NHS Mental Health Trust in 2005 as Records Manager (first time they had one in 12 years). Sorted out the Records Management to the point of implementing an electronic archive that meant they could link scanned historical records to the patient’s current EPR, so all the records were available in electronic format to those that needed them.
He joined NHS England from the outset (April 2013) in his current role, providing advice and guidance on IG issues to the wider Health and Social Care system – encompassing most recently GDPR.

Use the minimum necessary PCD
Access PCD on a strict need-to-know basis
Everyone accessing PCD to be aware of their responsibilities
Understand and comply with the law

Developing and fine tuning your clinical leadership skills: getting your voice heard across an organisation
Alan Nobbs, Senior Programme Lead, Programme Delivery & Frameworks, NHS Leadership Academy
Alan joined the NHS via a clinical route, commencing his registered general nurse training in 1984 and is currently the Senior Programme Lead for Programme Delivery and Frameworks at the NHS Leadership Academy – having joined the team in April 2013.
Following working in a variety of acute healthcare clinical practice roles, spanning a sixteen year period, Alan moved into an acute trust strategic management role with organisational responsibility for the delivery of the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease in 2000. Although part of a wider career development plan to progress to executive nursing director-level roles, the move prompted a change in career direction as he had the opportunity, during this period, to work closely with the Modernisation Agency where he developed a keen interest in the fields of innovation, improvement and leadership for change.
"You can’t impose anything on anyone and expect them to be committed to it"
"Every interaction by every leader at every level shapes the emerging culture of an organisation"
