News and presentations from today’s 10th Anniversary conference  debating the future of Psychological Therapies and IAPT and looking at the implementation and impact of the 5 Year Forward View for Mental Health so far.

DAY 1: The conference opened with a keynote address from Professor Bruce Wampold, Professor of Counselling Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA & Research Institute, Modum Bad Psychiatric Centre, Vickersund, Norway on improving outcomes by understanding how therapy works and improving therapist effectiveness.

To introduce the next session, the opening took an interview form with Jamie Hacker-Hughes and Alika Goodwin who discussed their own personal lived experiences of psychological distress therapists. Alika discussed how your life can change in a split second, that therapists are not immune and its important to talk each other. Jamie said we all need to acknowledge that we are all human and are all vulnerable to psychological distress and problems. Jamie said there is no them there is no us - there is only us. 

After the break the question time discussion chaired by Mark Easton Home Editor BBC debated:
• Being open and transparent about who is benefitting and who is not so that IAPT and the mental health strategy genuinely work for all 
• What we will invest in expanding the counselling and psychotherapy workforce to reach those who need help, when and where they need help 
• The 4th dimension: staff wellbeing. What does the Annual Survey tell us?
