NHS England Nursing Revalidation Update

Maureen Kirwan, Head of Nursing and Midwifery for Revalidation, NHS England asked the audience how many people had come from an organisational perspective and how many came to hear the conference from a personal perspective.

She urged the audience to consider themselves as individuals as well as their organisational responsibilities.

"We need someone at a senior level to be able to say 'this is what we need to do'. The risk of not getting this right as an organisation is high. I would recommend every organisation has a lead for revalidation.

"Revalidation is our professional pride for the job we do to meet the needs of the patient.

"The resource to support nurses and midwifes and to support CPD is an organisational responsibility.

"It's for us to determine what our professional needs are, what are education needs are for our patients.

"What we are just testing out now is what is the organisational readiness across England. There are different levels of understanding around Revalidation, and the challenge for us is, what are we going to do across the whole of the country

"Communication is a really, really big one and I don't think we have done as much as we need to do around communicating Revalidation. When I go to events I either get folks with a huge amount of anxiety because they don't know what they will need to do or people with a huge amount of scepticism because they think it is going to be a tick-box exercise. We have to ensure this is about our professional pride and does not become a tick-box.
