Patient suitability and referral criteria for OPAT: experiences at Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Sue O’Hanlon Lead Nurse for IV therapy in St Helens, Halton and Knowsley for Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust will be presenting ‘Patient suitability and referral criteria for OPAT’ at the Advancing IV Therapy conference on Thursday 3 December 2015 at the ICO Conference Centre, London.
Sue will share her experiences of assessing a patient's suitability, referral criteria for patients being considered for OPAT and potential risks and strategies for reducing those risks
This CPD certified conference will focus on the important issue of advancing IV therapy with a particular focus on implementing the new NICE Quality Standard, and on delivering IV therapy at home. NICE recently stated that there is a clear need for guidance on IV fluid therapy and the new quality standard and guideline is expected to contribute to improvements in the following outcomes, mortality or serious harm resulting from errors in IV fluid therapy; patient experience of hospital care; patient safety incidents reported and length of hospital stay.
“As many as 1 in 5 patients on IV fluids and electrolytes suffer complications due to inappropriate administration” NICE Press Release August 2014
“Every hospital should appoint an intravenous (IV) fluids lead to help ensure that patients receive the correct dosage and type of fluid” NICE Press Release August 2014
“we often leave the prescription of IV therapy to the most junior members of the team. Due to inadequate knowledge suboptimal prescribing of fluid is common” Dr Marlies Ostermann Consultant in Critical Care and Nephrology Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital Trust & Guideline Development Group Member IV Therapy in Adults in Hospitals Guideline NICE, January 2015
Delegates will have the opportunity to hear extended sessions focusing on how delivering IV Therapy at home (OPAT) is increasing due to shift in focus from hospital to community care and the impact on quality and productivity this brings.
