Preparing for implementation of the new access and waiting time standard for first episode psychosis

Sarah Khan Mental Health Senior Programme Lead NHS England spoke at today’s Psychological Therapies for Severe Mental Illness conference on:

• context for the introduction of access and waiting time standards and aims
• the first set of standards and plans for the programme going forward
• approach to measurement
• national implementation support resources
• regional work programmes
• progress thus far

Sarah said the first set of standards promises that 50% of people experiencing a first episode of psychosis will be treated with a NICE approved care package within 2 weeks.

There is £40 million recurrent funding to support delivery of early intervention.

Sarah is the Deputy Head of Mental Health & Adult MH Programme Lead in the Mental Health Clinical Policy & Strategy Team within the Medical Directorate at NHS England.  Previously, Sarah held senior roles at Central and North West London and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trusts leading strategy, planning, performance and information functions.
