Providing High Quality facilities for Day Surgery
Dr Anna Lipp President The British Association of Day Surgery spoke at today’s Improving Quality in Day Surgery conference on providing high quality facilities for day surgery including:
• benefits of dedicated facilities and staffing for day surgery
• planning effective patient flow and use of space
• appropriate use of theatre for GA or LA
In her presentation Dr Lipp discussed the challenge of providing high quality day surgery facilities stating;
“All patients should receive care in a dedicated day surgery facility”, but……
• Capacity of facilities is fixed while volume of day surgery is continually increasing
• Day surgery patients are managed in a variety of different facilities
Dr Lipp went on to discuss the different facility options and some of the advantages and disadvantages concluding that dedicated day surgery facilities provide highest quality care for patients, and out patient and community facilities should be utilised when appropriate
