Rachel Newson speaks on delivering effective care

Rachel began the presentation by advising the presentation will cover three main areas:
• Delivering effective services
• How to reduce variation and ensure consistently high quality across all wards and community teams
• Advice for inspection preparation and our experience

Rachel advised Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust was the first Trust in Wave 1 of the CQC Mental Health & Community new inspections, to be inspected. The presentation described some of our key tips for preparing for being inspected. Many of these were tweeted by Rachel (@ChiefExecCWPT) using the hashtag #CQCTips during our experience of preparing for and being inspected.

The presentation went on to describe how the Clinical Strategy, focused on outcomes, supports our ability to deliver effective care. Also set out is the type of things that the Inspectors focused on when considering effectiveness.

Rachel said " Its essential to prepare staff so they know what to expect from the inspection and was valuable to have a working log following each days activity and need to ensure you have good, positive, communication with staff."

Kate advised "Pre inspection - remind staff to have the confidence to not breach confidentiality. If requested for information by inspectors don't give copies of patient records. Not all inspectors are aware."

The presentation was concluded with some reflections on the experience, now that it is eight months on. It is important to note that as we and others have fed back to the CQC on the approach, and the CQC have had their own opportunities to learn, the approach continues to be developed and improved, advised Rachel.

"Be clear on outcomes you want to achieve and only make adjustments along the way that will have a positive impact. You'll never be in an ideal place or time for an inspection but don't worry about it."
