Setting the standards for EDM and delivering a paperless NHS
Prof Martin Severs Caldicott Guardian and Clinical Professional Lead Health and Social Care Information Centre spoke at today’s Electronic Document Management conference on setting the standards for EDM including;
• standardisation as a Fundamental foundation for EDM and information sharing
• ensuring consistency to the information used to make decisions about health and social care provision as well as facilitating interoperability between IT systems
• moving towards paperless practice
• information standards and an update from The Standardisation Committee for Care Information
In his talk Prof Sever’s gave the background to what the Health and Social Care Information Centre does and why the Standardisation Committee for Care Information is needed. He then went on to speak about the core requirements of an electronic record management system (as opposed to an electronic document management system).

Martin Severs joined HSCIC on 1 April 2014 on secondment from the University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
Clinically, Martin is a consultant geriatrician who is in active medical practice working in district general and community hospitals.
Academically, Martin is an Associate Dean (Clinical Practice) and co-ordinator of the University of Portsmouth Ageing Network.
In Health Informatics, Martin has had a number of national and international roles including Chairman of the Management Board of the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation, Chairman of the Information Standards Board and clinical lead for the Caldicott Information Governance Review: To share or not to share.
