In her presentation Teresa stated:
A Physician Associate is “…a new healthcare professional who, while not a doctor, works to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the general medical and /or general practice team under defined levels of supervision.”
What can Physician Associates do and how do they work?
Physician Associates work to the medical model with physician supervision, which evolves over time, within their scope of practice and within their sphere as competence as agreed with their supervisor, as dependent practitioners in a relationship between doctor and PA which is based on mutual trust and respect
What are the benefits of the Physician Associate role to the NHS?
- National curriculum = National standards
- 2 years post graduate qualification
- National standard at qualification
- Recertification every 6 years = ongoing standards
- Managed Voluntary Register including Fitness to Practice and Continuing Professional Development requirements

Teresa Dowsing’s Biography:
Teresa graduated from the University of Birmingham physician associate programme in 2010. Since then she has worked in geriatric medicine and currently works at George Eliot Hospital. Teresa is President of the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians and lecturer at the University of Birmingham Physician Associate programme.
