Meeting the national reporting requirements for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Vanessa Lodge Chair of the National FGM Steering Group at NHS England is confirmed to speak at the forthcoming ‘Improving Services Safeguarding & Meeting the National Reporting Requirement for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)’ conference being held in London on 10th May 2016.

Vanessa will give a national update and developments for tackling FGM and supporting health professionals who are directly working with women and girls that may be at risk or have been victims of FGM.

The conference will look at improving services, safeguarding, and meeting the national reporting requirements for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). National updates, extended sessions and case study sessions will look at obligations with regard  to reporting FGM, safeguarding those at risk of FGM, and providing effective services for victims of FGM.

A nurse by background with management and commissioning role experience, Vanessa’s current role includes within its portfolio adult and child safeguarding as well as continuing health care across London. Vanessa represents London on the national forum for NHS England and has a particular interest in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), where she represents health services on the Metropolitan Police Steering Group, and chairs the London and NHS England groups.

Guidance for mandatory reporting of FGM in healthcare has been released by the Department of Health and awareness is being raised; “We have introduced guidance on how to protect young girls and care for women who have already undergone FGM. And we have brought into legislation a clear new duty of when to report to the police cases of FGM in children. However there is still more to do and FGM prevention week is an opportunity for everybody to use this knowledge and guidance and take positive action to end FGM. We want to end FGM in a generation in the UK.”  Jane Ellison Public Health Minister
