Update from the Private Healthcare Information Network: improving information in private healthcare

Matt James Chief Executive Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN)  spoke at today’s Improving Patient Safety in Independent Healthcare conference on

  • the new information agenda for private healthcare
  • improving data, information and transparency
  • enabling informed choice of hospital and consultant

In his presentation Matt stated: 

“Private hospitals and consultants must produce better information for patients by April 2017”

“Implementation has to be achieved within 2015, so that data can be collected throughout 2016”

“Underpinning the performance measures is standardised data collection”

“There will be real benefits to the use of standardised data improved data”

“Detailed data will be made available to hospitals and consultants through a secure Information Portal”

“Transparency and comparability will improve”

“Three routes to improving patient safety through better data and information”

  • Better choices

Patients, GPs and commissioners base decisions on quality/ value

  • Better care

Clinicians use new data to understand and improve performance

  • Better regulation

More focused, better understanding of sector, right team for each visit…

Matt James’s Biography:

Matt established PHIN, the approved Information Organisation for Private Healthcare, in 2012. He was previously Chief Executive of the Private Hospitals Alliance, acting as the principal public spokesperson for private healthcare during the controversial passage of the Health & Social Care Act 2011. Matt was formerly Group Strategy Director for Care UK, and Group External Affairs Director for Nuffield Health, two of the UK’s leading healthcare providers, and served as Vice-Chair of the NHS Partners Network, playing a leading role in forging closer relationships between private and public healthcare. Before entering healthcare, Matt was a management consultant with AT Kearney, where he developed expertise in analytics and data visualisation
