Updated NICE quality standard for Falls in Older People.

NICE have released an updated quality standard which covers prevention of falls and assessment after a fall in older people (aged 65 and over) who are living in the community or staying in hospital. It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement.

Three new statements have been added (statements 1, 2 and 3), and all the statements originally published in 2015 (statements 4 to 9) have been retained.

The quality standard calls for people aged 65 and over to be regularly asked questions about whether they have fallen over in the last year or feel unsteady on their feet.

Our two forthcoming Falls conferences will discuss the new Quality Standard for Falls Prevention with Prof Cameron Swift Emeritus Professor and Consultant Physician King’s College London & Specialist Committee Member Falls Prevention Quality Standard NICE giving a national update as well as advice for implementing the Quality Statements in practice.  Speaking on the release of the new quality standard Prof Swift said; “We recognise that regular questions about falls may seem intrusive or repetitive, but older people often think episodes of falling or unsteadiness unimportant, or that to raise them could threaten future independence.” January 2017

“This quality standard prioritises the need to identify those at risk of falls, and assess and manage their associated factors so that we can prevent falls from happening in the first place.”
Dr Victoria Welsh, GP and specialist committee member, Falls Prevention in Older People, NICE, Jan 2017

Professor Gillian Leng, deputy chief executive at NICE, said: “We know that prevention is better than cure when it comes to falls, particularly in older people. ..Asking older people about falls on a regular basis will identify those who are most at risk. Through this simple intervention, those people can then be referred to the right health care professional or service to stop them falling in the future.” Jan 2017
