Ward Manager Update: Preparing for the revalidation process

Jo Odell Practice Development Facilitator, Patients First Programme at the Foundation of Nursing Studies spoke at today’s Effective Ward Manager conference on:

  • Demonstrating my own learning and development

  • The appraisal process for nurses and how this will feed into revalidation

  • The sign off process and the role of the confirmer

In her presentation Jo stated:

"continuing professional development, 20 of your 35 hours now has to be participatory"

"get into the habit of reflecting on things as and when you do them"

"it's down to you to choose who you want to have your reflective discussion with"

"why reflect? Not just to look back, is to make sense of what happened and get through the emotion of what happened"

"if you are a confirmer you are confirming that you have seen the evidence that the person says they have"

Abstract of Jo Odell’s presentation:

All nurses and midwives will have to revalidate to maintain their registration with the NMC. Taking effect from April 2016, revalidation is straightforward and will help nurses and midwives demonstrate that they practise safely and effectively. The new process replaces the current Prep requirements and nurses and midwives will have to revalidate every three years when they renew their place on the register. Revalidation builds on existing renewal requirements by introducing new elements which encourage nurses and midwives to reflect on the role of the Code in their practice and demonstrate that they are ‘living’ the standards set out within it. This session will give up to date information in relation to the requirements and process for revalidation. It will also offer the opportunity for participants to consider their own revalidation and their role in the revalidation of others.
