"The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence with NHS England recently published its Implementing the Early Intervention in Psychosis Access and Waiting Time Standard: Guidance document. This conference will focus on implementing the recommendations, and new national waiting time standards for Psychosis and Schizophrenia. The conference will also look at improving services for early intervention in psychosis following the July 2016 audit results which showed -marked variation in access and waiting times for EIP services across England.” (EIP Audit, Royal College of Psychiatrists July 2016)

"Delivering this scale of ambition will be challenging for many; but we must deliver it, and we must be able to show transparently the difference this has made for people. As well as outlining the expectations of the NHS and others, this implementation plan sets out how national partners will work together to provide the right enabling structures and frameworks and to demonstrate progress, as well as the support we will offer collectively to localities over the coming years” Claire Murdoch, National Mental Health Director

"The independent Mental Health Taskforce, which published its report in February 2016, highlighted the need to improve access to high-quality care for all. The introduction of the access and waiting time standard for early intervention in psychosis (EIP) services and improving access to psychological therapy (IAPT) services heralded the start of a new approach to deliver this improved access and embed standards akin to those for physical health. The EIP standard is not just a new approach for mental health but is a clear national priority for the NHS. Delivering the standard is one of the national commitments for 2016/17 in both the Mandate and the NHS Shared Planning Guidance.” Professor Tim Kendall National Clinical Director for Mental Health Implementing the Early Intervention in Psychosis Access and Waiting Time Standard: Guidance

Through national update sessions, presentations from people with lived experience, practical case studies and extended expert sessions the conference will update delegates on best practice and evidence with regard to the management of psychosis and schizophrenia. The conference will look at monitoring progress both locally and nationally against the National Quality Standard for Psychosis and Schizophrenia. Sessions will include a focus on key priorities such as prevention, access and early intervention, the use of antipsychotic medication, ensuring a recovery focused approach and supporting families, CBT for psychosis, improving care and support for people in crisis, learning from the National Audit of Schizophrenia and the important issue, highlighted by the Mental Health Taskforce of improving physical health.
