Improving Appraisal and Revalidation Systems and Practice

The conference focuses on developing your role as a responsible officer or appraiser, and improving local systems for appraisal and revalidation. The event will address referral to GMC when doctors fall short of the standards, and ensuring fairness and inclusivity in referrals following the GMC fair to refer findings aimed at reducing disproportionality. The conference will cover the role and competencies of Responsible Officers, improving appraisal and appraisal systems and decision making and making referrals to the GMC.

There will be an extended focus on responding to concerns about performance, conduct and health, and managing Doctors who fall short of the required standards for revalidation. The day will be led by experienced responsible officers in NHS Trust and the independent sector and will also include a legal update on legislation and employment law.

“Responsible officers have an important statutory role in medical regulation. The successful implementation of revalidation depends to a considerable degree on the competence and skills of those doctors carrying out this role. As a responsible officer you are accountable for the local clinical governance processes in your particular healthcare organisation, focusing on the conduct and performance of doctors. Your duties include evaluating a doctor’s fitness to practise, and liaising with the GMC over relevant procedures. It is your job to make recommendations; but the decision on whether a doctor should be revalidated belongs to the GMC, as the regulator. ”
