“The complexity of data governance requirements should not be a reason for inaction.” The Topol Review: Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future February 2019

“It is vitally important that the underlying data on which many digital healthcare technologies rely are subject to transparent, resilient, robust and legally enforceable data governance structures, policies and practices. Many new and emerging digital healthcare technologies rely critically on the ability to collect, store, access and share medical and other health-related data. The quality of the data used to inform these tools, including data gathered through continuous monitoring and tracking that many could consider intrusive, must be assured in order to facilitate their safe and effective use.” The Topol Review: Preparing the healthcare workforce to deliver the digital future February 2019

The conference will include case studies on information governance and instant messaging, video consultations, use of mobile devices and sharing of images.

“Instant messaging is a useful tool in supporting the delivery of direct care, particularly in an acute context. There are, however, some important data protection considerations surrounding the use of these systems… Instant messaging can have clinical utility but remember that the law places obligations on organisations to protect patient confidentiality. If you are a clinician, you may also have to defend yourself against regulatory investigation if you have not taken sufficient steps to safeguard confidentiality.” NHS England November 2018

“Helping people during a crisis like the Grenfell fire, demands a quick response and instant messaging services can be a vital part of the NHS toolkit. Health service staff are always responsible about how they use patients’ personal details and these new guidelines will help our doctors and nurses to make safe and effective use of technology under the most intense pressure.” Dr Simon Eccles, Chief Clinical Information Officer for Health and Care NHS England, November 2018

“There is a growing interest in the use of video conferencing as a cost effective and time saving option for managing consultations and, if the risks are managed appropriately, this is an exciting opportunity to use technology to support care. Managing the risks associated with video conferencing needs attention from both care professionals and service users and input from information governance and informatics staff.” NHS England November 2018
