News and presentations for today's Nurse Clinics 2019

The Value of Nurse Led Clinics
Today's chair Dr Richard Hatchett, Author ‘Nurse Led Clinics: Practice Issues’ & Senior Editor, RCNi

Pre-event abstract
The modern nurse-led clinic grew notably with NHS reforms at the end of the 1990s. There is a growing body of research and evidence showing the positive experience patients gain from nurse-led clinics. Richard Hatchett offers what he considers to be some of the most useful and most rigorous studies exploring their value. However, he expresses the need to understand the limitations of some of the studies and calls for the body evidence to be further developed.

Supporting nurses and midwives to take the lead and embed person-centredness and caring cultures
Joanne Bosanquet MBE
, Chief Executive, Foundation of Nursing Studies (FoNS)

Pre-event abstract
Joanne will share her leadership story, and especially her transition from a national Governmental role to her first role as a nurse CEO in the charity sector. Joanne is a firm believer in the power of feelings. Feelings are an integral part of our leadership journey and shouldn’t be shut away or dampened down in fear of being seen as weak or ineffective. If we are to build a truly person-centred and compassionate workforce, leaders at every level need to be in the same page.

Joanne said this morning:
"Do you have time to sit and think and reflect with you peers? If you all connected together and think of the power you would generate rather than being on your own and getting on with the job. Who knows what 2020 about? 2020 is the year where we celebrate ourselves. You all need to be on twitter by January to find your tribe nurses all over the world wanting to talk. The nightingale challenge - looking at the next generation. Nursing supporting our young campaign - call to action internationally - sign up and pledge to support our next generation of nurses. Reverse mentoring is important, mine is 24 years old and challenges my mental wellbeing"

NMC Update
Sue West
, Senior Nursing Education Advisor, Nursing & Midwifery Council

Registered nurses play a vital role in providing, leading and coordinating care that is compassionate, evidence-based, and person-centred. They are accountable for their own actions and must be able to work autonomously, or as an equal partner with a range of other professionals, and in interdisciplinary teams (NMC 2018)1. Nurse-led clinics and services are built on this foundation whereby nurses have increased their scope of practice to work autonomously making clinical decisions that may include referral to other professionals in a variety of clinical environments.
In March 2018, the NMC’s Council approve the Standards framework for nursing and midwifery education; Future Nurse: standards of proficiency for registered nurses and the standards for nursing and midwifery prescribing programmes. At the same time, the NMC has also agreed to the adoption of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) Competency Framework for all prescribers. This substantial programme of work was designed to ensure that future nurses are trained to successfully meet the challenges of providing safe and effective care to a changing population demographic in an increasing diverse numbers of settings in the coming decades. These new standards came into effect in January 2019.

Sue spoke about the Education programme:
"Standards for education and training – framework- published last year thou tweeks have been made to including nursing associates  Document for individuals to help progress Essential considerations- need to be effective partnerships Actively involve inter disciplinary colleagues  Future nursing prescribing- number of changes, everyone gets hung up on skills.  Future nurses proficiencies- 7 platforms- ambitious- ‘enabling to develop the future nurses.  Forward thinking"
