Providing the Highest Quality Care at the End of Life in Care Homes

Mon, 24 Jun 2024

Virtual, Online

The masterclass will emphasise the importance of all staff understanding the core principles that underpin the provision of excellent palliative and end of life care. It will embrace the value of teamwork and role clarity and responsibility in caring for residents with palliative and/or end of life care needs.

The programme will reflect national policies across the four countries. It will include the current challenges faced by Care Home staff and acknowledge the tragedy of the Pandemic. The Masterclass will use reflective practice and take the participants on a journey using case studies to demonstrate needs that residents may have and how these needs may be met. Challenges experienced such as access to controlled drugs will also be incorporated. The impact of a sick relative and the reality of living alongside the dying… will be explored.   The opportunity for shared learning will be provided with the importance of support for staff being discussed in a safe space.

Facilitator: Sandra Campbell (FRCN) Macmillan Partnership Nurse Consultant Palliative and End of Life Care on a national project with the Scottish Ambulance Service (since April 2022)

Since qualifying in 1981, I have gained experience in a variety of care settings and developed a passion for cancer and palliative care with a particular interest in the value and power of good communication. The strategic role of Nurse Consultant, both in my previous post and in my current post, allows me to fulfil a vision of really making a difference to patient care - by working with many teams providing leadership on initiatives in cancer and palliative care. My current post includes working with many teams at national level to develop alternative pathways to hospital admission at the very end of life. There is a particular focus on Care Homes. In 2014, I was honoured to become a Fellow of the RCN and I was privileged to be the UK Clinical Lead for End of Life Care on an RCN project in 2014-15 and to perform the role of National Clinical Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care in Scotland for two years, one day per week between 2017 and 2019.
