Follow the conference on X #DeprescribingMH
This conference focuses on optimising and improving deprescribing in mental health services as outlined in the NHS England Framework for action for integrated care boards (ICBs) and primary care.
The conference will explore the latest developments and guidance in deprescribing, including practical case studies from various trusts and initiatives. We will look at alternatives to pharmacological interventions, recovery from sleeping tablets and tranquilisers, and deprescribing in older people, followed by a panel discussion with leading experts in these areas.
Join us as we engage with leading experts who will share insights and success stories, as well as the potential future of deprescribing in mental health.
“The prescribing numbers for antidepressants have been consistently trending upwards in recent years. Clinicians treating someone who is taking them should regularly review whether they are still providing benefits or might no longer be needed. They should also inform the patient about the advantages and risks of reducing their dose so that they can take part in the decision-making process. It is important to note that, for many patients, antidepressants are part of a lifesaving treatment programme. Patients should not stop taking antidepressants suddenly and should talk to their doctor beforehand. ”
Dr Adrian James, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, January 2023
“Prescribing and deprescribing decisions should be made jointly with the patient; their informed consent needs to be obtained and appropriate information on the risks and benefits of using the medicines given. A shared decision-making approach will help manage patients’ expectations about managing their pain and other symptoms. ”
