Non-Medical Prescribing & the Acutely Ill Patient

This Conference is now Closed

Follow the conference on X #NMPacute

Non-Medical prescribers are ideally placed to ensure that acutely ill patients receive treatment without delay.  This important national conference provides an essential update for nurse prescribers in critical care. Critical Care Prescribing can be challenging due the complexity of critically ill patients who may have several underlying diseases and range of conditions likely to be encountered.  This makes it essential that non medical prescribers maintain the competence and skills to assess, treat and prescribe in an effective way to improve outcomes for patients.

Through national updates and extended interactive practical case studies delegates will hear how to develop and maintain prescribing competence, and how to develop effectiveness in post qualification practice. The conference will also reflect on case studies for prescribing and the deteriorating patient, prescribing for delirium and prescribing for pain, prescribing for sepsis including the prescribing of intravenous fluids, oxygen and analgesia. Case studies will be presented from critical care, critical care outreach, hospital at night & trauma and orthopaedics.

There will also be a focus on using the national prescribing competency framework in acutely ill patients,  understanding clinical pharmacology as a nurse/non medical prescriber in critical care, and undertaking an audit of prescribing decision making with reflection on commonly prescribed drugs by non medical prescribers in critical care, and learning for improvement.

Non‐medical prescribing should only be implemented to improve the safety and quality of care for the critically ill or deteriorating patient… Non‐medical prescribers must audit and evaluate their practice as well as ensuring continuing professional development.
