We are pleased to announce the 13th National Annual Caldicott Guardians Conference
An in-person event with a virtual attendance option, this conference brings together Caldicott Guardians from health, social care, and beyond. Building on the success of past Caldicott events and masterclasses, it offers a unique opportunity to explore current issues, understand the national context, and discuss key challenges faced in practice.
“The role of the Caldicott Guardian is to decide what’s the right thing to do.”
Nicola Byrne National Data Guardian for health and adult social care in England, 20th May 2025
“The Caldicott Principles ensure that health and care information is used and shared appropriately to support care. You should ensure any information you share, for care and other purposes, is consistent with these principles.”
NHS England February 2026
Chaired by Christopher Fincken, Former UKCGC Chair, this year’s conference will focus on developing your skills as an effective Caldicott Guardian with a particular focus on ethical decision making, leadership and learning from real Caldicott case studies. The Caldicott Guardian is often described as the moral compass of the organisation but it is not an easy role, this event will provide you with practical knowledge and tools to support you to ensure the Caldicott Principles are embedded into your organisation. Sessions will focus on national updates, raising the profile of your role, caldicott decision making and applying the new information sharing with police guidance. The conference will share a legal update on current difficult issues such as AI, information sharing after a death has occurred and the implications of the new safeguarding children legislation. Sessions will focus on real issues Caldicott Guardians are facing in practice, and experiences of Caldicott Guardians from the NHS, smaller organisations and the independent sector to help you to understand the role and structure options available. Delegates will also hear an update from the UK Council for Caldicott Guardians, and hear guidance on the Caldicott role in preparing for CQC.
The interactive extended masterclass will discuss real Caldicott Case Studies which will be presented by Christopher Fincken, the Panel of Caldicott Guardians will present how they would approach decision making and apply the Caldicott Principles in each case study. The case studies have been chosen to demonstrate the importance of the Caldicott Guardian as a moral compass of the organisation in ethical decision making and will focus on AI, inappropriate access to medical records and domestic violence.
“Everyone working in health and care, at all levels, needs to feel supported and well-informed when it comes to making decisions about people’s health and care information. In many instances, leadership around these activities falls to Caldicott Guardians.”
National Data Guardian December 2025
“Healthcare teams, social care providers and care coordinators all need timely access to people’s information to deliver the safest, most effective care. However, for many reasons, this is not always available when needed. Supporting and empowering staff to share information confidently and appropriately is therefore crucial, including across organisational boundaries, where it ensures continuity of care and prevents missed opportunities for people receiving the right care where and when they need it.”
