Effective Nursing Retention

This Conference is now Closed

Follow the conference on X #NursingRetention

There has never been a more important time to focus on Nursing Retention in the NHS. With staffing at crisis point in many organisations and a backdrop of nursing strikes and the cost of living crisis it is vitally important for NHS Trusts to focus on retaining the high quality nursing workforce within their ward, directorate and organisations. This conference will support you to improve retention in your service and develop and implement an effective nursing retention strategy. Case studies will focus on practicalities and advice from NHS trusts who have improved nursing retention in their organisations.

“Staff regularly fed back to us of being overworked, exhausted and stressed, sometimes to the point of becoming ill, injured or leaving their job altogether. They say low staffing levels can affect their ability to provide safe and effective care to people.”......... “Increasing demand and pressures on staff are taking a toll on their mental health and wellbeing. Staff have told us how, without the appropriate support, this is affecting the quality of care they deliver.”

Care Quality Commission, The state of health care and adult social care in England 2022/23 October 2023

"Employers must: Design and implement retention strategies. Employers should take action to identify and tackle the issues across the diverse nursing workforce as the basis for a robust retention strategy. This should be developed in collaboration with nursing leaders including the RCN. Strategies should address barriers to retention, such as improving pay and career progression, creating safe and effective staffing levels to ensure patient safety and reduce the stressors and improve the psychological safety of nursing staff, there should also be measures to reduce the costs of accessing work, greater provision of flexible working, and improving workplace culture. All strategies must address inequity in nursing workforce experience and outcomes, including responding to the needs of staff with protected characteristics."
