NHS England has released the first data collection on Corridor Care – Urgent and Emergency Care Daily Situation.
Data published on Thursday 11th June 2026 records nearly 3000 NHS patients are receiving corridor care – care taking place in inappropriate clinical settings.
The data shows an average of 2,241 patients receiving corridor care in emergency departments each day and a further 669 patients receiving care in general and acute care on a ward outside of a bed space.
“Corridor care is unacceptable, undignified and has no place in our NHS.
“We are publishing this data to shine a spotlight on where the problems are greatest and ensure trusts get the support they need, with the vast majority of corridor care concentrated in a small number of organisations.
“Ending corridor care for good will take time and different areas will need different solutions, but we are determined to eradicate this practice.”
Corridor care is a serious patient safety, quality and dignity issue across the NHS. National reports highlight that the use of corridors and other temporary care environments is unacceptable, and earlier this year NHS England confirmed a commitment to the eradication of corridor care, with specialist GIRFT teams providing tailored support to the most affected hospitals and national data collection beginning in 2026.
