Effective Ward Manager

Developing your role as a Ward Manager: A Lived Experience

Paul Rafferty
Deputy Chief Nurse
York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

• what I wish I’d known
• tips and advice for aspiring Ward Managers
• leading by example
• the highs and the lows of the role

Paul Rafferty discussed developing your role as a Ward Manager using his journey.
One key tip he gave was “work with your team”. Ask the team, what do they want to do, where do they see themselves?

Ask three questions;
•    What are the positives
•    What should we stop doing
•    What should we start doing

The role is about being an advocate, for the patients and for the staff

Your focus;
•    Your staff
•    Your patients & families
•    Your organisation

Be comfortable with the uncomfortable
