NHS England to accelerate AI adoption across the NHS

More than 500,000 staff will be given access to Microsoft 365 Copilot, the built in AI assistant which can help clinicians and managers to draft documents and analyse data, freeing up more time for patient care.

A trial of 30000 NHS staff across 90 organisations using Copilot  found that AI administrative support could save  staff an average of 43 minutes per day. A full rollout of MS 365 Copilot has the possibility of saving millions of staff hours per month.

Copilot can be used across the healthcare service for:

  • Clinical administration
  • Patient documentation
  • Supporting discharge processes, data analysis, rotas and bed management
  • Helping to draft board papers, briefings and organisational analysis
  • HR, Finance and Procurement functions

“Every day, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals spend valuable time on administrative tasks that take them away from patients. By rolling out Microsoft Copilot across the NHS, we can reduce that burden, free up clinicians’ time and help staff focus on what they do best caring for patients.”

Preet Kaur Gill, Health Innovation and Safety Minister
