Implementing the standards for 7 day Consultant present care in practice

Dr Chris Roseveare Chair of the Academy’s Project Sub-Group on 7 Day Provision and Past President of the Society of Acute Medicine, The Academy for Medical Royal Colleges, & Consultant Southampton University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spoke at today’s Delivering a 7 Day Health Service conference on:

• delivering the standards for 7 day consultant present care
• reducing the time to first consultant review
• the benefits of consultant delivered care
• how are trusts progressing against the standards?

Dr Roseveare’s full presentation is available for download at the end of this page.

In his presentation Dr Roseveare commented;

"Weekdays and weekends are not the same" "Considerably fewer patients are admitted into hospital at a weekend, rather than week day" "It’s the same with discharging – there are far fewer patients discharged at weekends"

"When asked why consultants didn’t want to work at the weekend – a lot of them say – ‘we can’t get scans done', or ‘we can’t get test results’"

"We need to move this discussion forward – not just blame each other"

"We are looking at the change in outcome as staffing levels change"

"We have made progress but it’s a long journey"

Dr Chris Roseveare graduated from Southampton University medical school and subsequently trained in gastroenterology and general internal medicine in the Wessex region. In 1999 he was one of the first UK Acute Medicine consultants to be appointed, at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has continued in his clinical role in Southampton, where he has developed a team of 5 Consultants in acute medicine, overseeing a purpose-built 53 bedded Acute Medical Unit (AMU). He maintains his interest in gastroenterology, undertaking two clinical sessions in  endoscopy each week. He has been editor of the Acute Medicine Journal since 2001 and his book, “Acute Medicine – Clinical Cases Uncovered” was published in 2009. He was inaugural Treasurer of the Society for Acute Medicine (SAM) from 2000-07 and its President from 2011 to 2013. Dr Roseveare represented Acute Medicine on the Council of the Royal College of Physicians, the RCP Acute Medical Care committee and the steering committee of the Future Hospital Commission. He was the principal author of the RCPL Acute Care Toolkit on 7 day working on the AMU, published in October 2012, and was co-chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges’ 7 day working subgroup, which produced the document ‘7 day consultant present Care’ in December 2012. Recently, he was part of the Clinical Reference Group of the NHS England Urgent and Emergency Care Review and the Steering Committee for the NHS England 7 day Forum Clinical Standards Group.

Chris has become an active user of twitter over the past 2 years, tweeting as @croseveare and intermittently from @acutemedicine alongside @ccharras; during last year’s Acute Medicine Awareness week (#AMAW13) he ran daily twitter discussions on topics relating to acute medical care. He also chaired the social media session at last autumn’s Society for Acute Medicine conference, which included the first ever live twitter link-up with the Royal College of General Practitioners’ meeting – the hashtag for this event #RCGPSAM trended nationally during the debate on ‘Can we use twitter to bridge the gap between primary and secondary care?’
