Quality Improvement: International Update

Nancy Dixon Healthcare Quality Consultant
Healthcare Quality Quest

• current developments in QI
• how do we embed an improvement culture
• what are the barriers and difficulties in quality improvement
• learning from international perspectives in QI

Nancy shared experiences working on quality improvement projects internationally in Qatar, Botswana, Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands.

She shared the learning saying that successful projects make use of everyone's ideas and follow a scientific approach.  She said the ultimate outcome of a QI project is to see evidence of improvements in quality, for this the following steps are important:

- Agreement on what's to be improved from staff and patients
- Commitment to do the work and to act involving teams, leadership and integration
- Evidence challenging current ways of working
- Changes that will produce improvement and analysis of root cause data
- Evidence of the impact

They came up with an Acronym ATEAM: Agree - Test - Establish - Analyse - Measure

Nancy said the essentials of a QI project are involving stakeholders from the start, developing multi-professional teams, and valid and reliable data.  Challenges from all projects were protecting time and competing priorities.
